Marketing your family business in a war-torn country might sound like a heavy cross to bear, but for Wafa Elnefeidi, third-generation general manager at Sudan’s Elnefeidi Group, the main challenge stems from gender inequality. 

Keeping a business afloat through two rounds of north-south civil war is no easy task. Imagine then the challenges of building out a marketing department in the same environment. Yet at the Elnefeidi Group, one of Sudan’s most prominent family-owned conglomerates, marketing has been a staple for more than 80 years.

Following the sudden death of her philanthropist husband late last year, Kris Tompkins, the US conservationist and former CEO of outdoor clothing brand Patagonia Inc, has begun talks with Chilean government over the donation of a vast nature reserve in southern Chile.

Tompkins is the widow of North Face founder and Esprit co-founder Doug Tompkins, who died in December in a kayaking accident. The well-known adventurer invested around $375 million in South American conservation efforts, particularly in Chile and Argentina.

Henkel names Hans Van Bylen as new CEO
Hans Van Bylen is to take over at German consumer goods maker Henkel after its incumbent chief executive Kasper Rorsted left to become the new CEO of Adidas.

Van Bylen, Henkel’s former head of the beauty care business, joined the family-controlled firm in 1984 and has been a member of the management board since 2005.

One of the world’s most successful hedge funds turned family office, Soros Fund Management, has promoted Ted Burdick as chief investment officer (CIO) five months after its top investor Scott Bessent left the family firm to launch his own $4.5-billion macro fund.

Formerly the head of distressed debt and arbitrage, Burdick’s promotion will make him the fund’s sixth CIO since 2000 – and the third to be recruited internally.

This article appeared in the Autumn issue of CampdenFO. Not long after the magazine went to print Doug Tompkins, whose foundation is mentioned in the text and whose wife, Kris, was interviewed for the article, died suddenly in a kayaking accident. Despite being a serial entrepreneur (he founded The North Face and co-founded Esprit), his philanthropy and commitment to conservation is one of the greatest legacies he leaves behind.

Michael Hill International addressed shareholders at its annual meeting in Auckland last week, the first time since the business transitioned from the first to second generation of the family.
