Gerald Bowthorpe, third-gen former chairman of UK-based facilities management group OCS, has died of cancer aged 74.

Bowthorpe worked for OCS for 44 years, starting as a contracts manager in 1957, and eventually retiring as chairman in 2001.The business grew extensively during this time, and expanded into multiple markets outside of the UK.

OCS is now the UK's largest family-owned facilities management group with an annual turnover of more than £750 million. There are currently 20 family members working in the business.

The heir to the Johnson & Johnson family fortune and one of the world's wealthiest women, Barbara Piasecka Johnson, has died aged 76 after a long illness in her native Poland.

Piasecka Johnson became famous when she married the 76-year-old second-gen of the pharmaceuticals family business, John Seward Johnson, the heir to the Johnson & Johnson fortune. He was 42 years her senior and left his wife of 32 years – Esther Underwood – to be with her.

Paul McIlhenny, chief executive and chairman of McIlhenny Company, the business behind Tabasco sauce, has died. He was 68.

Paul McIlhenny, chief executive and chairman of McIlhenny Company, the family business behind Tabasco sauce, has died. He was 68.

According to a statement by the Louisiana-based company, McIlhenny passed away on 23 February. Local New Orleans newspaper Times Picayune reported that McIlhenny died at his home of a heart attack.

The legendary owner of the Los Angeles Lakers has died of kidney failure at the age of 80. Jerry Buss passed away on 18 February in a Los Angeles hospital, having battled cancer since 2012. In a statement, the Buss family said it would do everything it could to “honour his wish" to keep the Lakers in family hands.

In a statement, the Buss family said it would do everything it could to “honour his wish" to keep the Lakers in family hands.

Buss bought the team in 1979, having developed a vast property empire in Los Angeles during the 1950s and 1960s. Under his watch, the Lakers won 10 championships, and in January 2013 was valued at $1 billion (€750 billion) by Forbes.

Shri Balvantray Kalyanji Parekh – founder of Indian family-controlled glue company Pidilite Industries – died on January 25 at the age of 88.

Despite his great age, Balvantray Parekh, known as Balvant, was chairman of the family business – which he founded with his brothers – at the time of his death. In a statement, Pidilite Industries said: "He promoted and encouraged the close teamwork between employees and value system, which emphasises commitment to excellence, closeness to customers and the spirit of innovation."

Dan Edelman, family business founder and a giant of the public relations industry, died of heart failure on 15 January at the age of 92.

Over the last 60 years, Edelman turned his Chicago-based PR firm into an international corporation with 4,600 employees in 66 cities and revenues of $637 million (€374 million) in fiscal 2012.

Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, the mother of media mogul Rupert Murdoch and a noted philanthropist, died on 5 December aged 103 at her home in Australia.

Dame Elisabeth Murdoch, the mother of media mogul Rupert Murdoch and a noted philanthropist, died on 5 December aged 103 at her home in Australia.

In a message on his Twitter account, Rupert, who heads up News Corporation, described Elisabeth as “a great lady, wife, mother and citizen”.

Born in Melbourne, Elisabeth married newspaperman Keith Murdoch in 1928 – he was 28 years her senior and one of the city’s most eligible bachelors. The couple had four children and were married for 24 years before his sudden death in 1952.

Phoebe Hearst Cooke, a member of the Hearst family and well known for her philanthropic endeavours, died on 18 November aged 85.

American media giant Hearst Corporation said in a statement that Phoebe died of pneumonia.

The granddaughter of William Randolph Hearst, who set up the family business after taking control of the San Francisco Examiner, Phoebe served on the company’s board of directors for 36 years.
