Peter Lewis, the second-gen US businessman who transformed Progressive Corporation into a multi-billion dollar company has died at his home in Florida over the weekend.

The eccentric billionaire became chief executive of the car insurer in 1965 and held the post for 35 years. He remained chairman until his death.

Lewis’s father, Joseph Lewis, co-founded the company in 1937 with Jack Green. Joseph had been grooming his son to take over, but died suddenly while Lewis was still a junior at Princeton University.

The second-generation head of an automotive company, and one of Thailand's most successful businesswomen, has died from heart failure at the age of 67.

Khunying Phornthip Narongdej started working in her father's company, Siam Motors, as a secretarial assistant at the age of 17, rising through the ranks to become president and chief executive.

Siam Motors was the main Thai distributor of many Japanese heavy machinery and automobile brands, including Nissan and Datsun, when Phornthip took the reins.

Hans Riegel, the second-generation head of German family confectionary firm Haribo – renowned for its colourful ‘gummi bear’ sweets – has died at the age of 90.

He had headed the family firm for almost 70 years, and still held the post of chief executive at the time of his death.

He had been convalescing following an operation to remove a benign brain tumour, but died of heart failure on Tuesday, in his hometown of Bonn in Germany.

A self-made billionaire, Desmarais, took control of the Montreal-based hydroelectric company in 1968, serving as chairman and chief executive for almost three decades, before his two sons took over.

Eiji Toyoda, who helped transform Toyota Motor Corp into the world’s largest carmaker, has died in Japan at the age of 100.

Eiji Toyoda, who helped transform Toyota Motor Corp into the world’s largest carmaker, has died in Japan at the age of 100.

A cousin of the automaker’s founder, Toyoda joined the company in 1936 – fresh from his graduation from a mechanical engineering degree. He went on to serve as president from 1967 to 1981, and then served as chairman until 1994.

He remained an honourary adviser at Toyota right up until his death. He died at a hospital set up by the Toyota City-based company in 1938 for its factory workers.

Doris Schnuck, matriarch of US grocery company Schnuck Markets, has died aged 88 at her home in St Louis, the same city where the family business was founded in 1939. The wife of the late Donald Schnuck, Doris had been in failing health for sometime, a company spokesperson told local news source St Louis Post-Dispatch.
